Expert Perspective: Start With the Site, Not the Charger
“Our biggest competitor really isn’t other contractors or installers. It’s cost,” says John Carper of Blue Whale EV. That is why the team starts with the operating need and the existing electrical system before recommending equipment.
A clear site assessment helps the owner understand utility work, permitting, installation distance, networking, and maintenance. It also identifies where a phased plan can control cost without limiting future growth.
At Blue Whale EV, we’re not just installing chargers—we’re building the infrastructure to support a cleaner, smarter, more sustainable future. We sat down with members of the Blue Whale EV team to talk about what drives them, what excites them about the EV industry, and what’s next for Blue Whale.
Q: What makes Blue Whale EV different from other EV infrastructure companies?
A: We’re not a one-size-fits-all company. Blue Whale EV tailors each solution to the unique needs of our clients—whether it’s a municipality electrifying its fleet, a multifamily property adding resident chargers, or a business installing public DC fast chargers. Our team combines technical expertise, project management, and customer support to guide clients from initial site assessment to final installation and ongoing service.
Q: What kind of projects are you working on right now?
A: We’re proud to be involved in a number of exciting projects across the public and private sectors. Recently, we completed a large-scale install for a public agency, which included dual 180kW DC fast chargers and multiple Level 2 ports. We’re also supporting school districts with fleet electrification and working with local governments to expand public charging access.
Q: What’s the biggest challenge clients face when adopting EV charging?
A: For many clients, it’s understanding where to start. Permits, utility coordination, hardware selection—it can feel overwhelming. That’s where we come in. Our team demystifies the process, handles the heavy lifting, and ensures every project is compliant, scalable, and future-ready.
Q: What drives the team at Blue Whale EV?
A: Sustainability is at the heart of what we do. But we’re also excited by innovation and progress. Our team is passionate about solving complex problems and creating infrastructure that truly makes a difference—for our clients, our communities, and the planet.
Q: Are there any recent milestones you’re especially proud of?
A: Absolutely. One standout is our recent partnership with the Maryland Environmental Service to implement a multi-phase, 50-port EVSE system. It’s a great example of how we approach large-scale projects with precision, accountability, and collaboration.
Q: What’s ahead for Blue Whale EV?
A: Growth and impact. We’re expanding our reach, onboarding new talent, and staying ahead of industry trends. As incentives grow and regulations shift, we’re positioning ourselves—and our clients—to lead the charge in transportation electrification.
