3 Ways To Save On EV Charging

Rebates, Incentives, and Grants

Rebates, incentives, and grants can significantly reduce EV implementation costs for both residential and commercial projects, including fleet options. Maryland offers strong support for commercial EV projects with various resources available.

Federal EV Charger Tax Credit (30C):

  • Covers 6%-30% of costs for EV charging stations, equipment, and installation
  • Capped at $100,000 per site
  • Most projects qualify for 6% unless they meet specific criteria

Maryland EVSE Rebate Program:

  • Offers the lesser of $5,000 per charger or 50% of project cost
  • Maximum annual rebate of $125,000
  • Dual-headed charging stations count as a single charger

Maryland has three utility companies offering rebate programs: BGE, Delmarva, and PEPCO. Let’s look at BGE as an example

  • BGE Commercial/Fleet Programs:
Fleet Program: Make-ready incentives up to $15,000/site or 90% of make-ready cost (100% in disadvantaged communities)
  • Level 2 Charging: $5,000/port or 50% of project cost
  • DCFC Charging: $15,000/port or 50% of project cost

Grants and Other Programs To Ease EV Charging Costs

Beyond the standard federal, state, and utility programs, there are additional opportunities that your project may be eligible for. While these programs often have more specific requirements and involved application processes, they can provide substantial support:

National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program

  • Supports charging infrastructure along designated EV corridors

  • NEVI provides funding to states to establish a nationwide network of EV charging stations

Clean Fuel Infrastructure Grant

  • Aims to strategically deploy charging stations for accessibility in urban and rural communities

  • Can cover up to 80% of infrastructure and charger costs

FAQs About EV Charging Incentives

What types of incentives are available for EV charging infrastructure?

There are three main types of incentives available:
federal, state, and utility programs.

These can include tax credits, rebates, grants, and make-ready programs. The specific incentives available depend on your location, business type, and the scale of your EV charging project.

2. Can different incentives be combined?

Yes, in many cases, multiple incentives can be stacked to lower overall costs.
In certain instances, it’s possible to combine a federal tax credit with a state rebate and a utility make-ready program. However, the rules for combining incentives can be complex. Our team at Blue Whale EV specializes in identifying all eligible incentives and determining how they can be combined for your specific project.

3. How much can these incentives reduce the cost of implementing EV charging infrastructure?

The total cost reduction can vary widely depending on your location, the scale of your project, and the incentives available. In some cases, incentives can cover up to 80% or more of the total project cost.

For example, federal tax credits can cover up to 30% of costs (capped at $100,000 per site), while some state and utility programs offer additional substantial rebates. Blue Whale EV will provide a detailed analysis of potential savings for your specific situation.

4. Are there any ongoing incentives after the initial installation?

Yes, there are programs that offer ongoing incentives. Some utilities provide reduced electricity rates for EV charging or offer demand response programs that can provide additional savings. There may also be opportunities for carbon credits or other sustainability-related incentives.

5. How does Blue Whale EV stay updated on changing incentive programs?

Our team dedicates significant resources to monitoring federal, state, and utility websites, attending industry conferences, and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in the EV charging ecosystem.

We also use specialized software to track changes in incentive programs across the country. This allows us to provide our clients with the most up-to-date information and strategies.
